All thatched roofs are supported by a timber structure, normally referred to as a cut roof.
This is typically created by a carpenter using various different sizes of treated timber which has been determined by a structural engineer. It is a highly skilled job that if carried out properly, will form a roof that will last several hundred years. When purchasing a thatched cottage, it is imperative that a survey is carried out on the roof to establish the structural integrity of the roof. This can be arranged by either getting in touch with an experienced thatcher or a surveyor.
The photographs shown give an idea of a typical new cut roof.
